freedom group adA new report by the Violence Policy Center (VPC) reveals the disturbing details of how one gun manufacturer markets military-style assault weapons.

Freedom Group–the manufacturer of weapons such as the Bushmaster assault rifle with a 30-round magazine used by Adam Lanza in the Newtown massacre–uses militaristic language and images to target gun buyers who fantasize about completing ‘missions’ or conducting ‘patrols.’

VPC Executive Director Josh Sugarmann commented, “This company is aggressively promoting assault weapons and high-capacity ammunition magazines that are designed for no purpose other than to kill other human beings as quickly and efficiently as possible.”

Freedom Group (now called Remington Outdoor Company) is owned by Cerberus Capital Management, which pledged over one year ago to sell all its investments in the company but has failed to do so. Freedom Group is also an official NRA “corporate partner” and has donated at least $1 million to the NRA to help it block efforts to prevent gun violence.

Gun manufacturers, including Freedom Group, are exhibiting this week in Las Vegas at the Shooting, Hunting, Outdoor Trade Show–aka SHOT–to market their military-style weapons and ammunition–and to celebrate all the profits they’re making from them. An estimated 62,000 people are expected to attend–and shop for guns.
