NYAGV was on hand in Mineola May 17 as Nassau County legislator Ellen Birnbaum announced the introduction of a gun safe storage law.

“This bill aims to prevent injury or death such as when children shoot themselves, friends or family in their own homes or their classmates in schools,” Birnbaum stated. “Proper firearm storage, including the use of a safe storage depository or safety locking device, will deter the theft of guns to be used in crimes and will also reduce the rate of suicide by firearms.”

The measure would require gun owners to keep their firearms locked up or stored in a safe.

Seven New York municipalities have enacted safe storage laws: Albany, New York City, Saratoga Springs, Westchester County, Syracuse, Buffalo and Rochester.

NYAGV is advocating on both the municipal and state level for these laws, proven to prevent shooting deaths and injuries as well as gun thefts. The state-wide Nicholas’s Law was approved by the New York State Assembly in 2015 but has not been taken up by the Senate.
