New Yorkers Against Gun Violence joined Moms Demand Action for Gun Sense in America on May 29 to demonstrate against Senator Ted Cruz (R-TX) and denounce his stance against common sense gun laws. The rally, held near the Grand Hyatt in New York City, drew approximately 150 gun safety advocates. Cruz was at the hotel to headline a New York State G.O.P. fundraising dinner. NYAGV and MDA condemned Cruz for kowtowing to the gun lobby instead of serving the will of the American people.

“I think it’s really ridiculous, all these people coming to New York to raise money when their voting records are really diametrically opposed to what New Yorkers want — and what the American people want — when it comes to gun safety,” said Leah Gunn Barrett, NYAGV executive director, in an interview with NPR at the rally. During the recent federal debate on background checks and other gun safety measures, Cruz spread lies about what common sense gun reform would mean for this country and stoked fears with gun owners, all while accepting thousands of dollars from the NRA.
