Award recipients (L-R) Abidul Ali, Edgar Bucio and Enmanuel Diaz, with NYAGV assistant program director Kristine Arroyo.

The NYAGV Education Fund recently awarded $500 scholarships to four students in its ReACTION Youth Education Program to reduce gun violence.

The students, all seniors going on to college in the fall, were awarded for their outstanding leadership and participation as well as the lessons they took away from the program.

Congratulations to each of these impressive young men!

reaction-scholarship-abiduhl-HSAbidul Ali, of Ozone Park, Queens, will be attending Brooklyn College: “I used to believe that no politician cared about what minorities/inner city urban kids have to say about their communities, but I was wrong. . . On our Albany trip, my classmates and I met with our state senators and staff members, and got to discuss the problems our communities face relating to gun violence and gun trafficking.”

Edgar Bucio, of Jamaica, Queens, will be attending Lehman College: “The ReACTION Program has taught me and my peers that we can influence change and we do not have to wait until we are older to be heard, for we are the future and our thoughts count.”

Enmanuel Diaz, of Washington Heights, Manhattan, will be attending LaGuardia College: “We, as teenagers, can control what we do. . . We need to lead others in our generation to make the same wise choices. My part can help the whole, which is to make our communities safer and better. After all, it’s our future, not just mine.”

Abigul, Edgar and Enmanuel each graduated from the High School for Leadership and Public Service in Manhattan.

reaction-scholarship-1-2016Heriberto Paulino, of East New York, Brooklyn, is attending Brooklyn College: “I learned that most of the deaths caused by lack of gun control nationally went to suicides. This allowed me to realize the true harm of a gun. . . Yes, I can make a change in my community by being that role model for the young and upcoming generation.” Heriberto graduated from the High School for Public Service in Crown Heights, Brooklyn.
