–New York Would Require Mandatory Surrender of Firearms After All Domestic Violence Convictions, Including Misdemeanors–

Governor Andrew M. Cuomo yesterday unveiled a proposal to remove all firearms from those who commit domestic violence crimes.

The legislation would require the immediate removal of all firearms from individuals convicted of domestic violence misdemeanors and prohibit those individuals from possessing firearms. The bill would also add measures to remove firearms from those who are subject to domestic violence protective orders.

“This important proposal would close loopholes that currently allow some domestic abusers to keep their guns,” stated Rebecca Fischer, NYAGV Executive Director. “We applaud the Governor’s action and are proud that New York State continues to be a leader in strong, sensible laws that reduce gun deaths and injuries,” she added.
