Virginia is known for its weak gun laws–as are the other states that top the list of out-of-state sources providing the city with crime guns: North Carolina, South Carolina, Pennsylvania, Georgia and Florida. And in 2011, 90% of all guns used in city crimes came from other states.

“This is exactly why we need strong federal gun laws,” said NYAGV Executive Director Leah Gunn Barrett. “While New York State and New York City have been leaders in gun safety, our citizens still suffer from the flow of guns into our communities from weak gun law states,” she added.

New York City Mayor Michael Bloomberg commented, “To those who say, ‘Stay out of our state, our answer is, ‘We’d love to. Just as soon as you stop letting guns seep into the black market and land in the hands of criminals and be used to murder our citizens.'”
