The “thoughts and prayers” of politicians will do nothing to prevent the next mass shooting. Or the next. Or the next.

The truth is, much can be done to keep guns out of the hands of dangerous individuals–and to help prevent the carnage that Americans fear each day, whether they’re at church, in school, at work, or on the street.

NYAGV advocates for many policies to reduce and prevent gun violence in New York and across the country. Here are two measures you can take action on today:

1. Extreme Risk Protection Orders

Sign the petition to tell state lawmakers to support the Extreme Risk Protection Order (ERPO) bill in New York, which would enable family, household members, and law enforcement to petition a court to temporarily suspend the individual’s access to firearms. ERPO laws are an effective way to reduce suicides by firearm, domestic gun violence, mass shootings, and other gun deaths and injuries.

2. Federal Assault Weapons Ban

Thanks to the New York SAFE Act, the purchase of military-style assault weapons is banned in our state. But we need a federal ban on these weapons to prevent mass shootings nationwide and to reduce the trafficking of these weapons into our commuities. Senator Diane Feinstein has introduced the Assault Weapons Ban of 2017, a bill to ban the sale, transfer, manufacture and importation of military-style assault weapons and high-capacity ammunition magazines. Contact your Congressional representatives today and demand they act to protect American citizens by banning assault weapons.

Thank you for taking action to protect New Yorkers and all Americans from gun violence.
