New York Attorney General Eric Schneiderman Joins with Gun Show Operators to Establish Model Practices to Ensure Background Checks are Performed on All Sales at NY Gun Shows

New Yorkers Against Gun Violence applauds New York Attorney General Eric Schneiderman for working with gun show operators to establish model procedures for ensuring that background checks are completed for all gun purchases at New York gun shows.

The new procedures were established as a result of a 2011 sting operation by the Attorney General’s office. The procedures involve the use of a tagging system that will ensure that all firearms entering and exiting the gun show premises have been subject to a background check. Twenty-eight gun show operators have already sign on to this historic agreement. The new procedures are inexpensive and do not create any additional burden on gun show operators or purchasers.

“Once again New York is leading the way in gun safety. This pioneering approach, bringing the gun show operators into the fold and working with them to improve their business practices, will enhance the public safety of all New Yorkers by keeping guns out of the hands of dangerous individuals. We hope it will serve as a model for the nation,” said Leah Gunn Barrett, Executive Director of New Yorkers Against Gun Violence.

The recently-enacted NY SAFE Act established a requirement for background checks on all private sales, including those at gun shows. These model procedures will keep New Yorkers safe by helping gun show operators adhere to the letter and spirit of the new law.
