Although facts are still developing, reports have confirmed that a gunman armed with an AR-15 assault weapon shot and killed at least 17 students yesterday at Marjory Stoneman Douglas High School in Parkland, Florida.

“Once again, we grieve for the victims and their families in the aftermath of yet another horrific school shooting,” said Rebecca Fischer, Executive Director of New Yorkers Against Gun Violence.  “Easy access to guns–particularly weapons designed to kill many people rapidly–repeatedly leads to tragedy and loss of life. Our elected officials, including our President, offer mere “thoughts and prayers” and many Americans feel absolutely helpless. But we cannot sit idly by and accept this daily carnage as normal.”

Fischer continued, “We call on Congress and the President to pass a federal assault weapons ban and other common sense gun violence prevention laws that would help prevent further mass shootings and the trafficking of these weapons into our communities. Tweeting thoughts and prayers will not protect our children. Only action will.”
