NYAGV Press Conference Calls for CAP Law to Prevent Child Gun Deaths

Oxsana Naumkin spoke about her son, Nicholas–who was shot and killed by a friend playing with his father’s unlocked, loaded gun–and the need for a child access prevention law in New York State.
NYAGV’s held a press conference Tuesday with State Legislators Against Illegal Guns and victims of gun violence to defend NY SAFE and to call for additional gun safety measures to save lives. The event was held inside the Capitol Building in Albany.
One such measure–Nicholas’s Bill, A8293–the Child Access Prevention or Safe Storage Bill–would require the safe storage of guns in the home.
NYAGV’s Leah Gunn Barrett commented, “Nicholas’s Bill is all about gun-owner responsibility–and responsibility is something that even NRA members have touted. Requiring gun owners to be responsible for safely storing their guns and keeping them away from kids should be something we can all agree on.”
Also on April 1, an anti-NY SAFE rally was held by the gun lobby at Albany’s Empire State Plaza. “Westchester County Executive Rob Astorino, who headlined the event, promised to repeal the SAFE Act. Since a recent Siena College survey showed 63% of New Yorkers support the SAFE Act, Astorino clearly doesn’t speak for the majority of our state’s citizens,” said Barrett.
