NYAGV’s Executive Director Leah Gunn Barrett participated in a round table on gun violence with former Maryland Governor Martin O’Malley and other gun violence prevention advocates on September 14.

Also participating at the round table were Thomas Howard, Jr., Executive Director of Boys & Girls Harbor in Harlem–where the event was held; Jackie-Rowe Adams, co-founder of Harlem Mothers SAVE; and mothers of sons lost to gun violence.

Governor O’Malley, a candidate for the Democratic presidential nomination, unveiled his plan to combat gun violence that aims to reduce gun deaths by half by 2025. O’Malley’s plan includes a national firearms registry, revoking licenses when gun dealers break the law, an end to unregulated Internet gun sales, information-sharing between states, and new safety standards for government-purchased firearms.

“Governor O’Malley is the only presidential candidate–in either party–who has proposed a concrete, detailed plan to reduce gun violence,” said Barrett. “We call on all other candidates to give this urgent issue the attention it deserves,” she added.
