New Yorkers Against Gun Violence Applauds Governor Cuomo’s Common Sense Approach to Gun Laws – Respecting Public Safety and the Constitution

New York, New York – On January 9th, in his State of the State address Governor Cuomo introduced a sensible and common sense plan to make New York State safer, end heartbreaking gun violence and take military style weapons and high capacity magazines so often used in mass shootings off the streets. The Governor’s thoughtful and reasonable proposals not only pass constitutional muster-they also confirm that extremism has no place in our legislative work. In the recent Heller decision the Supreme Court stated that the Second Amendment should not be understood as conferring a “right to keep and carry any weapon whatsoever in any manner whatsoever and for whatever purpose.”  There are reasonable limits under the Second Amendment to protect public safety.

Today we applaud Governor Cuomo for his strong stance on protecting New Yorkers from unnecessary gun violence. “Reasonableness and common sense are the hallmarks of good governance and both are in ample supply in the package of gun bills the Governor proposed in his State of the State,” said Jackie Hilly, Executive Director of New Yorkers Against Gun Violence.

Each of the proposals offered by the Governor addresses a well-known loophole that has allowed guns to fall into the wrong hands. Law abiding citizens applaud the harsher penalties for those who use guns in crimes. And background checks help insure that criminals do not obtain guns in the first place.

2012 will go down as the most deadly year for mass shootings in our nation’s history. We watched seven deadly and horrific mass shootings involving assault weapons and high capacity magazines. The public has cried out for safety and an end to the military-style weapons that murder innocent children and people at places of worship, movie theaters and malls. Our state and nation demand reasonable, common sense solutions. Shooting victims like Gabby Giffords and her husband Mark Kelly call for responsible solutions to gun violence. We agree.

Thank you Governor Cuomo for your leadership.
