–New York State Legislators, Youth Activists, and Award-Winning Author to Be Honored at the October 28 Gala–

The NYAGV Education Fund has announced the honorees for its 2019 Annual Benefit on October 28 in New York City. The event supports NYAGV youth and community education programs. (Click here to reserve your tickets and sponsorship.)

The honorees, chosen for their contributions to gun violence prevention, are:

Angie Thomas, the author of the award-winning novel The Hate U Give, which was adapted into a major motion picture in 2018. The book and film have inspired a generation of young activists to speak out for safety and justice in their communities.

Carl Heastie, the Speaker of the New York State Assembly and the first African-American to preside over the chamber. Heastie has represented the 83rd Assembly District in the Bronx since 2000. He has been a fierce proponent of both gun violence prevention and the transformative power of education.

Andrea Stewart-Cousins, the New York Senate Majority Leader and the first woman to serve in that role. Stewart-Cousins has represented the 35th Senate District, covering parts of Westchester County, since 2006, and is a long-time advocate for underserved communities and youth.

Under the leadership of Speaker Heastie and Majority Leader Stewart-Cousins, this year New York State enacted a sweeping package of gun safety laws that banned bump stocks, prohibited teachers from carrying guns in schools, enacted a red flag law, and strengthened the background check system.

Brian Kavanagh, State Senator representing the 26th Senate District in lower Manhattan and Brooklyn. Senator Kavanagh has made gun violence prevention a signature issue during his 13-year tenure in the state legislature and sponsored this year’s Extreme Risk “Red Flag” Protection Order bill.

Youth Over Guns, NYAGV’s youth advocacy group. Youth Over Guns was formed by New York City students of color shortly after the Parkland shooting to draw attention to the daily gun violence devastating underserved communities. Joining with NYAGV in 2018, the group has organized marches and rallies and led workshops for middle and high school students about gun violence prevention and advocacy.

Join us October 28 to honor these leaders in gun violence prevention!
