The NYPD’s announcement that it had seized 250 illegal guns from southern states–the largest cache in the city’s history–highlights the need for strong federal gun safety laws starting with background checks on all gun sales and tougher penalties for gun trafficking. While federal laws are essential to New York’s fight against illegal guns, the U.S. Congress had shamefully failed to pass common sense gun laws despite overwhelming support from the American people. A staggering 90% of crime guns recovered in NYC comes from states with weak gun laws.
