Akeal Christopher was shot and killed walking home from a party in Brooklyn.

Akeal Christopher died on what would have been his 15th birthday, July 10, 2012.

Fourteen days earlier, Akeal was shot in the head as he was returning to his father’s home after a graduation party in Bushwick, Brooklyn.

Akeal and his friends were confronted by two men that police suspect were gang members. Akeal had no criminal history, and police did not believe he was involved in any gang activity, according to wsjonline.com.

A student at Transit Tech High School, Akeal wished to be an engineer when he grew up.

Guns are all too easy to get on the street in neighborhoods like Bushwick. Akeal’s shooting is just one more reason why Congress needs to pass strong federal gun laws to help keep guns out of New York communities.
