NYAGV applauds the New York State Assembly’s passage of the Extreme Risk Protection Order (ERPO) bill on March 6.

NYAGV has been advocating for this legislation, which would enable families and police to prevent individuals in crisis from accessing guns through court-issued protection orders.

NYAGV Executive Director Rebecca Fischer advocating for the ERPO bill in Albany last week.

Rebecca Fischer, Executive Director of NYAGV, said, “In the aftermath of the Parkland massacre, our lawmakers here in the New York Assembly have stepped forward once again to prevent senseless tragedies. We call on the New York State Senate to follow the Assembly’s leadership and pass this bill to save lives.”

The ERPO legislation is sponsored by Assembly member Simon and Senators Brian Kavanagh and Brad Hoylman. The Assembly bill passed with support from both Republicans and Democrats. In the face of federal inaction, the bill sponsors are part of a growing coalition supporting enactment of ERPO in New York, including NYS Attorney General Eric T. Schneiderman, NYAGV, and other advocacy groups.
