As Mayor Bloomberg’s administration ends, NYAGV applauds his leadership in fighting for strong gun safety laws and enforcement.

In 2006, with Boston mayor Tom Menino, Bloomberg founded Mayors Against Illegal Guns –an organization that works to make communities safer by keeping illegal guns out of dangerous hands. With over 1,000 mayors and 1.5 million supporters, the organization has aggressively confronted the corporate gun lobby and anti-gun-safety officials, and performed numerous sting operations that demonstrated the huge loopholes and weaknesses in federal gun laws.

“Mayor Bloomberg knows that weak federal gun laws endanger New York City residents, since guns from other states continue to flood the city’s communities,” said Leah Gunn Barrett, Executive Director of New Yorkers Against Gun Violence. “We applaud the Mayor for his leadership in the efforts to elevate the conversation about the dangers of gun violence and to enact strong federal gun laws,” she added.

“Incoming Mayor Bill de Blasio is also active in pushing for strong gun safety measures. As public advocate, he headed efforts to force institutional investors to divest of their holdings in gun manufacturers,”  said Barrett. “So we look forward to working closely with him on efforts to keep New Yorkers safe from gun violence,” she added.
