NYAGV’s Executive Director, Rebecca Fischer, joined state legislators in Albany at a press conference on February 27 to advocate for the New York Extreme Risk Protection Order bills (S.7133/A.8976). Extreme risk protection orders would enable families and police to prevent individuals in crisis from accessing guns through court-issued protection orders.

“We thank our supporters for helping us make progress on this bill,” said Fischer. “By signing our petition and phoning their legislators, they’ve made it clear that they want action on the ERPO bill, which will help prevent suicides, mass shootings, and other tragedies,” said Fischer.

Nearly all Senate Democrats–including members of the IDC–have co-sponsored the Senate bill. Senators Jeff Klein and Diane Savino conveyed their support at yesterday’s press conference in Albany.

The Assembly Codes Committee unanimously approved the Assembly’s ERPO bill on February 28. It now awaits a vote on the Assembly floor. (The Senate version is still pending in committee.)
