Here we go again. Another disturbed man with a violent past was able to legally buy a gun and use it to massacre innocent people–this time killing 12 and wounding eight at the Navy Yard in Washington, D.C. NBC reports that the shooter, Aaron Alexis, recently bought at least one gun legally at a gun shop in Virginia–a state with weak gun laws. He also had a history of gun violence–firing guns on at least two occasions.
Reports say the killer began his attack with the shotgun he recently bought, but was found with other weapons that he may have taken from one of his victims.
There’s still a lot of speculation and unanswered questions in this case. But the American public is tired of these massacres. We need stronger federal gun safety laws. Laws like universal background checks to keep guns out of the wrong hands. Stronger anti-trafficking laws to keep guns off the streets. Bans on assault weapons and high-capacity magazines to reduce mass slaughter.
