At this year’s Annual Benefit & Silent Auction on October 20, Joan Wallstein will receive special recognition for her 18 years of leadership, service and dedication to New Yorkers Against Gun Violence and its Education Fund.
Wallstein is most proud of the part she played in the success and growth of the reACTION Youth Education Program, which teaches New York City public school teens about avoiding guns and gun violence.
Joining the Board in 1995–when the organization worked out of a home in Brooklyn–she then served as Vice President for seven years and Board Chair for four years until January 2014.
Earlier in her career, Wallstein served as an Assistant Housing Commissioner for 14 years during the Koch Administration. Her division developed and managed innovative programs that renovated distressed City-owned residential buildings and returned them to private ownership as tenant cooperatives and community-owned rentals. She also consulted on housing and community development issues.
