At the NYAGV Education Fund 2014 Annual Benefit & Silent Auction on October 20, Manhattan District Attorney Cyrus R. Vance, Jr., will be the recipient of the Detective Steven McDonald Law Enforcement Award for successfully developing and implementing strategies and tactics to reduce New York City gun violence.
Since becoming the District Attorney of New York County in 2010, Vance has worked to create safe havens and activities for youth–such as basketball tournaments–to keep them off the streets and away from gun violence. He has also been an advocate of strong gun laws, pushing for legislation that protects victims of gun-related domestic violence.
Vance expanded the expertise of the D.A.’s office to better focus on gun crimes, domestic violence, gang-related crimes and terrorism, as well as “21st century” crimes such as cybercrime and identify theft.
The Detective Steven McDonald Law Enforcement Award is named for New York City Detective Steven McDonald, who was shot and paralyzed in the line of duty in 1986. Since his shooting, McDonald has led a quest for a just and peaceful society, speaking to young people and community groups about his experience and leading discussions about non-violence.
Join us to honor Cyrus R. Vance, Jr., and other GVP leaders!
