According to a report by The American Academy of Pediatrics (AAP), the absence of guns from children’s homes and communities is the most reliable and effective measure to prevent firearm-related injuries in children and adolescents. Firearm-related deaths–including homicide, suicide, and unintentional deaths–continue to be one of the top three causes of death in American youth. If you have children in your home, or you’re interested in keeping youth safe, read this valuable report. To reduce gun violence among children, the AAP supports regulations for child access prevention, safe storage practices, regulations on the purchase of guns, and a ban on assault weapons. NYAGV also supports these and other gun safety measures–click here for more details about pending legislation and ways to help.

NYAGV executive director Leah Gunn Barrett commented for “Guns Marketed to Children?”–an investigative report by WABC Eyewitness News. The May 7 segment focused on how gun manufacturers market to children using cute names for guns, like the “Crickett” or “Chipmunk,” as well as a variety of gun colors, like pink for little girls. “It’s about growing the market for guns in the future. Kids getting hooked on guns just like the tobacco industry wanting kids to get hooked on cigarettes. It comes down to the bottom line of money and profits,” said Barrett for the piece.
The first arrest made under the New York SAFE Act, enacted in January, shows that the new law is working to protect New Yorkers from gun violence. Raysheem Washington, 25, was arrested in Troy, NY, by police on May 7, possessing a .9mm handgun with 13 rounds of ammunition. Under the SAFE Act, magazine sizes are limited to 10 and bullets to seven. Washington was charged with second and third degree criminal possession of a weapon, having a magazine greater than 10 rounds and with second degree obstruction of governmental administration and resisting arrest. Enacted in January, the New York Secure Ammunition and Firearms Enforcement Act gives New York State one of the most comprehensive gun laws in the nation, with provisions to keep guns out of the hands of dangerous individuals and bans on assault weapons and high-capacity magazines.

Rather than being used for self-defense, guns in the home are 22 times more likely to be involved in accidental shootings, homicides, or suicide attempts. Many of these accidental deaths involve children–like the recent heartbreaking reports of a 2-year-old shot by a 7-year old; a 3-year-old shooting himself; a 6-year-old shot by his older brother, and so many others. NYAGV is working to enact new gun safety laws in New York State that require child access prevention (CAP) and safe storage of firearms, and supports New York Assembly bill A-03941, the Children’s Weapon Accident Prevention Act, sponsored by Assemblyman Harvey Weisenberg. The Act “creates crimes of failure to store a weapon safely in the first and second degrees, aggravated failure to store a weapon, and criminally negligent storage of a weapon in the first and second degrees and directs the commissioner of education to develop a weapons safety program.” How can you help? Contact your representative in the New York State Assembly and urge him or her to support the bill! Find your New York State elected officials here.
A New Yorker blogpost tackles the question, “How can we defeat the NRA?,” with input from NYAGV’s Executive Director, Leah Gunn Barrett. Barrett and other gun safety advocates speak about the many organizations fighting for common sense gun laws–moms, mayors, victims, doctors, state and local groups and more –and the coordination of these grass roots efforts vs. the NRA’s single, monolithic voice. “Our fragmented approach has its advantages,” states Barrett in the piece. Arkadi Gerney, a former head of Mayors Against Illegal Guns, now a senior fellow at the Center for American Progress, agrees, adding “It’s going to take a bunch of actors and a lot of voices. . . to engage.” Click here to read The New Yorker blogpost by John Cassidy in his May 8 ”Rational Irrationality” column.

After the U.S. Senate voted down universal background checks and other gun safety measures, NYAGV and other gun safety groups held a “We Will be Heard” rally on April 20 to demand federal gun safety legislation and to praise New York’s Senators for their support. Attended by hundreds of concerned citizens, the rally was held outside the New York City offices of Senators Schumer and Gillibrand, and featured words from the families of shooting victims and encouragement from leading gun safety advocacy organizations including NYAGV, Moms Demand Action for Gun Sense in America, Mayors Against Illegal Guns, OFA-NY and NYC for Action, and others. Leah Gunn Barrett, NYAGV Executive Director, spoke at the rally and appealed to participants to continue to fight for common sense gun safety laws including universal background checks and bans on high-capacity magazines and military-style assault weapons. New York’s two senators stood with the 91% of Americans who support background checks as a sensible way to curb preventable acts of gun violence and to help protect the nation’s communities and children.
