City Council Shooting Demonstrates That No Place Is Safe From the Scourge of Handguns and Handgun Violence
(New York City) New Yorkers Against Gun Violence (NYAGV) extends its sympathies to the family and constituents of New York City Councilmember James E. Davis (D-Brooklyn), a former police officer and outspoken supporter of gun violence prevention measures, who was gunned down this afternoon in the City Council chambers of City Hall in Manhattan.
Reports stated that at least 12 shots were fired in the council chamber. City Hall is one the most secure locations in New York City, yet, inexplicably, a gunman was able to sneak a handgun through security and wreak havoc this afternoon.
"Today’s tragic events once again demonstrate that even highly secure places like City Hall are not immune from the horrific effects of gun violence", said Andy Pelosi, Executive Director of New Yorkers Against Gun Violence. "While New York City has dramatically seen a drop over the last 10 years in the number of firearm related homicides, nearly 60% of all homicides that occurred in New York City in 2001 (latest year in which figures are available) were firearm related," Pelosi continued.
"James Davis was a good and dear friend and colleague. It is so sad and ironic that he has become a victim to the gun violence he did so much to end. He will be sorely missed," stated Ralph Hubbard, longtime NYAGV board member.
"Councilmember Davis realized the need to combat all forms of violence, particularly gun violence, and worked hard in the community and the City Council to promote alternatives to violence", acknowledged NYAGV Board Chair, Jacqueline W. Kaye.
