GRANITE HILLS SHOOTING 3/22/01
“How many more senseless tragedies must occur before Congress realizes that easy
access to firearms is a big part of the problem”?
New Yorkers Against Gun Violence (NYAGV) reacts with sadness at yet another
school shooting in California. On Thursday, March 22nd, an eighteen year old
shot and injured students at the Granite Hills High School in El Cajon,
California.
While complete details concerning the origin of the gun have not been disclosed,
we do know that young people across this country are finding ways to easily
obtain guns and ammunition. Congress continues to ignore the problem by failing
to pass laws, which would prevent young people from having access to guns.
Specifically, Congress has not even closed the gun show loophole, which helped
provide the guns for the Columbine shooting in 1999.
Already in 2001, school shootings have occurred in high schools in El Cajon,
CA, Santee, CA, Oxnard, CA and Williamsport, PA. Teenagers are shooting victims
in many other places as well – on Tuesday, a fifteen year old girl was hit in
the leg at 66th and Broadway when a young man indiscriminately fired a “Mac 11”
semi-automatic weapon. Luckily, no one else was injured.
When will our legislators pass common sense gun laws to keep guns out of the
hands of young people?
